Tuesday 18 July | The Making of Jane Austen

Prof Devoney Looser (Arizona State University)
5.15pm, National Library of Australia

Devoney Looser’s lecture will introduce you to some of the unsung innovators who first turned ‘Miss Austen’ into a household name, from artists and activists to actors and audiences, looking at how they made and remade her image before popular audiences.

Join us in the National Library of Australia Theatre on July 18th, the 200th anniversary of her death, to celebrate Austen’s life and writings and make sense of how her characters and stories have come to be imprinted on each new generation of readers.

Thursday 28 September | Identity and Transnationalism in Australian and Global Art

John Young
3.30pm, National Portrait Gallery of Australia

Artist John Young in conversation with Dr Christopher Chapman and Christine Clark from the National Portrait Gallery and Professor Jacqueline Lo, The Australian National University

John Young discusses his figurative, abstract and textual projects which have been realised in the last decade. While these projects re-imagine events and subjectivities, recently they address the history of the Chinese diaspora. As ever in his work, these projects implicitly address the urgent issues of time, speed, the transcultural and ethics.
